Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5. During the year children have the opportunity to build on the foundations set in lower key stage two whilst increasing their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. Children's independence and resilience is nurtured in order to prepare them for year 6.

Children are encouraged to prepare themselves for lessons and be responsible for organising their own belongings such as P.E. kits, reading and spelling books. I encourage P.E. kits to be in school every day. Reading books / diaries and spelling logbooks should go home each night and be returned to school each day.

Homework will be set on Seesaw on a Tuesday. Homework will alternate between English and Maths and may also include other activities related to our topics. Reading for pleasure is something that we strongly encourage in Year 5 and across the whole school. We expect children to read at home at least 3 times per week.

New spellings are given out on a Friday and the weekly spelling test will be completed on this day. When children come into school each morning, they will complete early morning spellings and maths activities. It is important that children continue to practice their times tables so that they can be recalled rapidly, along with corresponding division facts.

In the Spring Term, children go on a two-night residential visit to an outdoor pursuits centre where they can try caving, raft building, zip wire and numerous other heart raising activities! It is a fantastic trip, encouraging children's team building skills and allowing them to grow in confidence, whilst staying away from home with their friends.

We have a 'marble jar' in our classroom and children earn marbles as a group or whole class. Marbles are given for a variety of different reasons such as excellent work, kindness towards others, being helpful or exceptional behaviour. When the jar is full, children choose an activity as a reward. Children also continue to collect house points for themselves and their house.

Please feel free to get in touch regarding any further questions you may have.
