Welcome to Year 2

The Year 2 team are looking forward to a fun and productive year.

Learning in Year 2

The Year 2 curriculum builds upon and extends the many experiences that children have had in Year 1. The childrenwill have a formal learning environment in Year 2 but they will carry on learning through exciting topics. We want motivated, enthused and eager learners. Phonics will be taught every morning for 20 minutes to help with reading, writing and spelling. The children are expected to become more independent readers and writers as the year advances. If you have any questions or queries about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to come and see me either before or after school.

Reading in Year 2

Your child will be given a book and a reading diary to bring home each night. Please comment in the reading diary each time your hear your child read. When you finish a book with your child it would be great if you could write that in their diary so that we know to change it. We will hear your child read regularly in school to assess their progress. Throughout the week the children will also get lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books independently.

Reading is so important to the progess your child makes through school! Thank you for all of the times you hear your child read - it really does make a difference.

The list for each week's spelling's will be put in your child's reading diary.

The best way for children to learn how to spell a word is if they use a separate piece of paper to:

  • Look at the word.

  • Cover up the word.

  • Write the word.

  • Check their spelling against the original.

Their spelling test is every Friday. We will put your child's test results in their reading diaries so that you can see how they are getting on and any words that they might need to recap.

General reminders

  • The children will be doing PE on Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled. If at all possible children need a pair of sturdy trainers for outdoor PE ( which happens thoughout the year).
  • Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be put in your child's book bag.
  • The children can access their own water (please no juice - even if it's clear!) throughout the day and will bring it home each night.
